If you have started looking into ways to keep an ageing parent safe at home, you will already have met the wall of jargon. Pendants, panic buttons, fall detection, motion sensors, radar, AI, machine learning, activity monitoring. Every product promises peace of mind, and every product sounds a little like the last one. It is genuinely hard to tell what will keep your mother or father safe from what is simply well marketed.
This guide is written to cut through that. No sales pitch, no jargon left unexplained, just a plain account of how home safety technology actually works, how the options really differ, and the questions worth asking before you spend a euro. It is written for the adult son or daughter of a parent who wants to stay in their own home.
The three generations: pendant to sensors to AI
It helps to see home safety technology as three generations, each solving a problem the last one left behind.
The first generation was the pendant alarm. A button, worn around the neck or wrist, that your parent presses to call for help. It was a genuine leap forward, and for the right person it still works well. Its weakness is simple: it only helps if your parent is wearing it, can reach it, and is conscious enough to press it.
The second generation added passive sensors. Motion detectors, door contacts, bed and chair sensors that quietly track whether the normal rhythms of the day are happening, the kettle going on, the bathroom being used, movement around the house. Nobody has to press anything. The limitation is that a basic sensor knows movement happened, but not what it means.
The third generation is AI. Instead of a single sensor reacting to one event, the system learns what a normal day looks like for your parent and watches for the two things that matter most: a fall, and a quiet drift away from their usual routine. Pendants: what they're good and bad at
The pendant alarm deserves credit. It is affordable, well understood, and in Ireland it is available through the Seniors Alert Scheme, often free of charge. For a mobile, alert person who reliably wears it, a pendant is a sensible first step, and for many families it is exactly the right answer.
But it is worth being honest about the gap. A pendant depends on three things all being true at once: it has to be worn, it has to be within reach, and your parent has to be able to press it. Take any one of those away and it cannot help.

Radar and non-wearable sensors sit in the middle. They detect movement, falls, and patterns without anything to wear and without filming anyone. Radar can even work in the dark and through steam, and it does not capture a recognisable image. What "AI fall detection" actually means
"AI" is the most over-used word in this whole market, so it is worth saying plainly what it means here, because the reality is simpler and more reassuring than the buzzword suggests.
A good AI monitoring system does two things. First, over the early days and weeks, it learns your parent's normal pattern, roughly when they get up, how they move around the house, when they settle at night. It is not looking for anything in particular yet. It is just building a picture of what ordinary looks like for this one person.
Then it watches for two kinds of departure from that normal. The first is a sudden event, the shape and speed of a fall, a body going to the floor and not getting up. The second is quieter and often just as important: a gradual drift away from routine. Someone who stops moving around as much, spends far longer in bed, or stops using the kitchen may be becoming unwell, and that slow change is exactly the kind of thing a family living at a distance can miss for weeks.

The World Health Organisation identifies falls as a leading cause of injury in older adults, and research on the long lie, including the BMJ study noted above, shows that time on the floor is closely tied to worse outcomes, dehydration, pressure injuries, hospital admission, and loss of independence.
The logic of passive detection follows directly from that. It does not stop the fall. It changes what happens next, and for an older person that is very often the part that matters most.
Choosing what fits your parent
The mistake families make most often is starting with the technology and trying to fit the parent to it. It works far better the other way round, start with the person, and match the tech to them.
- Is your parent mobile, alert, and reliable about wearing things? A pendant, or a modern wearable with fall detection, may be all they need, especially if they are often out and about.
- Do they forget, refuse, or dislike wearing a device? Then a worn alarm is a false comfort, and a passive, non-wearable system is a much safer fit.
- Is privacy a red line for them? Rule out cameras and look at radar or stick-figure systems that record no footage.
- Are you more worried about a slow decline than a single dramatic event? Then look for a system that learns routine and flags gradual change, not just falls.
